Turkey’s female athletes went down in sports history by winning one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
At the 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan’s capital, Turkey was represented by 50 female athletes. Because medals seized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are not recorded, Athens in 2004 had the most women’s medals. The owner of the first gold medal in Turkish Boxing history: Busenaz Sürmeneli
Busenaz Sürmeneli, 23, who participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to represent Turkey in the boxing branch, added a new one to the gold medals she won at the Under-22 European Boxing Championship in Russia, the International Hand Boxing Tournament, and the World Women’s Boxing Championship. Buse Naz Çakıroğlu brought an end to a 13-year wait.
Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, a national boxer who competed in the Olympics and reached the finals in the 51 kilogramme weight class, won a silver medal. “We set the way for everyone who will come after us,” Çakıroğlu, who is also the European champion and second in the world, said in a statement following the medal presentation. With her silver medal, Çakıroğlu became the first boxer from Turkey to win a boxing medal in the Olympics 13 years later.
She kept her promise to her father: Hatice Kübra İlgün
Hatice Kübra llgün, a national taekwondo player, earned bronze in the 57 kg category. In her post-Olympic triumph statements, Ilgün stated that she pledged an Olympic gold to her father, who died 12 years ago, and that she was glad to have kept her promise to him.
