The 26 female members of SYRIZA have condemned the sexist attacks against Efi Achtsioglou, the party’s only female presidential candidate. In response, Achtsioglou stated, “As women, we might find these attacks unsettling, especially if they originate from our region, but we are warriors, we are women of the left, we are fighters.”

A statement has been issued by 26 female members of SYRIZA, the main opposition party in Greece, condemning the sexist attacks directed at the party’s only female presidential candidate, Efi Achtsioglou. The statement underscores that these attacks exemplify sexism and points out the absence of similar pressures on male candidates.
Emphasizing that the party’s core principles include combating sexism and promoting gender equality, the female members assert that supporting Achtsioglou aligns with SYRIZA’s responsibilities. They clarify that their response doesn’t necessarily indicate endorsement of Achtsioglou’s candidacy, but rather stands against the dual standards confronted by the female presidential candidate.
‘We are warriors’
In the wake of Alexis Tsipras’ resignation, Achtsioglou, who has declared her candidacy for party leadership, has been subjected to derogatory content on social media. Discussing the sexist attacks and the support from within her party, Achtsioglou expressed, “As women, we might find these attacks unsettling, especially if they originate from our region, but we are warriors, we are women of the left, we are fighters.”
Achtsioglou also addressed the forest fires and the recent altercation among fans in Athens, continuing her statement as follows: “Let’s question whether we truly deserve this summer we’re experiencing, and whether this is the life we aspire to. Uncontrolled fires, an unparalleled level of sensitivity, a system reminiscent of the Middle Ages, and the murders committed by unrestrained Nazi hooligans.”
Support from competitors as well
Achtsioglou’s two opponents, Evklidis Tsakalotos and Nikos Pappas, also made statements supporting their female competitor and condemning the sexist criticisms directed at her. Tsakalotos and Pappas conveyed a message of solidarity with Achtsioglou, referring to her as their ‘comrade.’
Political analysts emphasize the perspective that the attacks against Achtsioglou signify the ongoing divisions within SYRIZA as the party moves forward from the leadership of Alexis Tsipras. In comparison to her center-leaning competitors Tsakalotos and Pappas, Achtsioglou is perceived as a ‘more leftist’ figure. The sexist attacks are seen as an effort to undermine Achtsioglou’s credibility among the progressive base of the party. Additionally, the origins of these attacks from circles closely aligned with Tsipras raise uncertainties. Experts agree that the support messages coming from prominent women within the party could reinforce Achtsioglou’s stance as a champion of equality and human rights.
