In a report published by Lost in Europe, it was revealed that 51,433 children who migrated to Europe within the last three years have been unaccounted for after their arrival.
The report highlighted Italy as having the highest number of missing children. Over three years, 22,899 unaccompanied migrant children were registered as missing in Italy. Austria followed Italy closely, with 20,077 missing children.
Aagje Ieven, the Secretary-General of Missing Children Europe, described these figures as “alarming.”
“The iceberg looming beneath the surface”
Speaking to Lost in Europe, Ieven stated, “The increase in the number of reports on missing unaccompanied children sharply reminds us of the iceberg looming beneath the surface.”
Lost in Europe had previously published a report examining child disappearances between 2018 and 2020, which was released in 2021.
In that report, it was found that 18,000 unaccompanied children had gone missing after arriving in Europe between 2018, 2019, and 2020. The new report, released on Wednesday, shows that this number has almost tripled in the following three years.
