Earlier this year, Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who tragically passed away after three years of imprisonment, was awarded the Deutsche Welle Freedom of Speech Award for continuing Navalny’s political efforts.

Yulia Navalnaya announced that she would assume the leadership of the “Anti-Corruption Foundation” (FBK), founded to uncover and expose cases of bribery and abuse of power among Russian elites, three days after her husband, Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, passed away in February 2024.
Yulia Navalnaya, along with the “Anti-Corruption Foundation,” has been awarded the 10th Freedom of Speech Award by Deutsche Welle (DW). Peter Limbourg, DW’s Director-General, expressed that they were honored with the award due to the “unwavering courage” demonstrated by Navalnaya and her supporters in their fight for a free Russia. He continued, stating:
“Yulia Navalnaya has supported her husband, Alexey Navalny, in his political activities advocating for press and speech freedoms in Russia from the very beginning, despite all risks, constant threats, and personal limitations.”
By announcing her intention to take over her late husband’s work and embark on a political career, Navalnaya is seen by some observers as the new face of opposition in Russia.
Symbol of moral resistance
Political scientist Dmitry Oreshkin argues that Yulia Navalnaya could symbolize resistance against male oppression in Russia.
Oreshkin points out that while most men in Russia believe that NATO will attack the country, women are often forced to deal with more immediate issues. “Their husbands are killed, their brothers have to join the army, and their sons are sent to death in Ukraine” he says. “The thoughts of women in Russia do not revolve around any ideology, they just want their family members to return home. Navalny’s image can act as a unifying factor for the opposition both inside and outside the country.”
Andrei Kolesnikov from the “Carnegie Endowment for International Peace” organization from Washington, on the other hand, believes that Yulia Navalnaya could become a “moral symbol of resistance”. He added: “If we are ever in a situation where a Democratic presidential candidate is nominated, Julia will be the best candidate anyway, in the opinion of millions of people.”
In a statement following her husband’s death, Yulia Navalnaya said, “By killing Alexei, Putin killed half of my being, half of my heart, killed half of my soul.” And the other half, which remained, is now, she says, full of “fury, anger and hatred” – things that will push her forward to realize her husband’s dream: to build a Russia “full of dignity, justice and love”.
Yulia Navalnaya will be presented with the Freedom of Speech Award on June 5, 2024, in Berlin, by Christian Lindner, the Finance Minister and Chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
